 What is Depression?
Many wonder what depression is. Some doubt it even exists. Others are sure it is a lack of willpower. It seems obvious that a person needs to simply “get going.” Activity would truly bring a good result if only the depressed person could…would… The very ingredient most helpful does not seem available to the depressed person.

Some 19 million Americans every year endure some level of depression. In fact, it is the number one emotional malady we face today. Of those who experience depression, it is estimated that 20% are biologically based.

What else causes depression? After 30 years of clinical experience I have found two major life circumstances at its source. The first is loss. Real or symbolic loss accumulates, exacting an emotional cost from us.  Life changes such as moving, taking a new job, adding a family member or losing someone close all make their demands on our core person. Surveyed over a year or two we are sometimes surprised how many of these events occur in a relatively short period of time.

The second major circumstance is when we feel we have few options or no exit at any time.  We feel disempowered to face life decisions.  That is not a feeling most adults relish.  Most of the time we would like to see ourselves as competent and capable persons.  To feel the uncertainty of which way to go and the depletion of diminished resources, we are likely to feel defeated and/or depressed.
